Out with the fall, and in with the winter season. Living in Oregon is surely no walk in the park. If you know a thing or two about the state, a true Oregonian is no stranger to the rain. But with rain so prominent in everyday life, could this affect the overall mood of Oregonians?
It’s been proven that weather has a direct effect on people’s mood. For example, feeling down or crummy in addition to dark, cold, rainy weather is more than likely to bring your mood down. However, warm sunny weather easily can increase someone’s state of mind. But with the cold and rainy weather becoming more common in the winter season, ideally, it would lower people’s mood. But does this evidence truly affect the wellbeing of Oregonians? Beaverton High students had the chance to weigh in.
When asked about how they felt about the weather, junior Kenna Reid replied, “I like the rain because of the sound it makes when it hits my roof.” She later went on to say, “Sometimes it bothers me because it can make my day feel gloomy and long.” In contrast, sophomore Cary Cundari claimed, “I don’t mind the rain at all, I actually enjoy it. I feel like a lot of people always feel down in the rain, but it never really bothered me.” After reaching out to students it was apparent people had some conflicting opinions.
Despite reports of people feeling down or tired during the rain, others don’t seem to mind altogether. Is it possible that the weather truly doesn’t affect mood? Digging deeper than just the rain, it’s likely that the amount of sunlight has a larger correlation with the state of mind. This is more than likely due to the amount of vitamin D absorbed. So what does this mean for Oregonians? For starters, in the winter months, those living in Arizona are surely exposed to significantly better weather than Oregon. But with no doubt, Oregonians are used to it. In a sense, those living in Oregon are tougher than those living in sunny Arizona. The warm weather some people chase is a gift, rather than a given in Oregon.
With students having a chance to weigh in, some claimed that the rain didn’t bother them at all, but others emphasized that the cold rainy weather was bothersome. With all opinions aside, it’s important to keep a positive mind, which will help to contribute to your overall well being. So put on a smile and don’t let that rainy weather get you down!
