The Beaverton Fishing Club meeting started off in Room 165. The smell of popcorn and donuts filled the room. Over 15 people showed up to the club’s inaugural meeting. At the meeting, the attendees and the club’s founder, Beaverton freshman Luke Fuller, discussed the future of Beaverton’s newest club.
Fuller has been avidly fishing for the last four years. Fuller stated, “Beaverton is an amazing fishing area, there are tons of great spots, and I wanted to get people out there.” Jerry Christiansen, the sponsor of the Fishing Club, is a health teacher at Beaverton. Christiansen said, “I love [fishing] with friends of mine. I’ve been fishing with some of them for 20-plus years.”
Christiansen started the meeting by explaining how to get a fishing license. He moved on by giving advice on when and where to fish. Then the meeting shifted over to fishing experiences that the attendees had. Asked why he joined the club, Beaverton freshman Mason King, stated, “I want to hang out with friends, and I want to catch some fish.” Near the end of the meeting, Fuller was unanimously elected president of the club.
The club will give tips and tricks on when and where to fish. Fuller also intends to help organize a fishing team. This team would be affiliated with OSAA and compete in competitions year-round. The club cannot technically organize fishing trips with the school, but it is still a great place for anglers to make connections. Future meetings will be held every other week during Beaver Lodge. Asked for any final remarks, Fuller said, “Tell a friend, build the community.”
