On October 20, 2023, the four vending machines in Beaverton High School were removed. Without the vending machines, BHS students have no way of getting snacks or sodas on campus. The vending machines were removed due to students abusing them. Students repeatedly broke the machines by hitting, kicking, and shaking them trying to get their money back. The vending companies have had to spend money on fixing the machines too many times and no longer want to have their machines in BHS.
Many students have found ways to continue to get their sodas and snacks. Some students bring sodas from home, while others pick up food from the nearby McDonald’s, Dairy Queen, or Burger King. BHS is a closed campus, which means students are not allowed to leave, but some students leave school to get lunch and come back. If students come back late from lunch, they will have to go to the office and get a late pass to class.
The principal, Mr. Kearl, sent out an email telling students about the removal of the vending machines. Principal Kearl acknowledged that students would miss the vending machines.
“You will likely hear rumblings from students, and we will also send out communication to students and families as well at the end of the week, but our vending machine vendor is removing his vending machines from BHS. The machines have been eating students’ money and the machines, in turn, have received some damage from frustrated kids. We are unsure if or when we will have vending machines again, but the pond is open during lunches for students who need a snack, and the pond has promised not to eat students’ cash.”
