It’s a cold Thursday afternoon, and the grill beside the student section at Beaverton High School is sizzling. Since October 2011, Daniel Beshears and Matt Evans have been grilling burgers and hotdogs on the sidelines of every home football game at Beaverton High School. They sell between 60 and 110 burgers and hotdogs a week.
Beshears and Evans have been grilling burgers for Beaverton High School since the grill master position at Bucky’s Burgers opened up, prior to the 2011 football season. “I think our wives volunteered us,” Evans joked. Beshears and Evans had seemingly always been involved with volunteer work, whether it was for their kids’ sports, or Beaverton High School
Their friendship expanded beyond just grilling burgers as their children got married to each other in 2019. Grilling had always been a hobby for the two of them; when the opportunity arose to grill for the school, they took it.
The proceeds from Bucky’s Burgers go towards student and staff wellness programs, special events in the community, and fundraising for clubs and teams at the school. Everybody at Beaverton High School has directly or indirectly benefited from the service that Evans and Beshears do.
When asked if they had any plans for expanding into spring and fall sports, Beshears and Evans were pretty clear that they were sticking to only grilling during the football season. Bucky’s Burgers have provided an incredible service to the Beaverton High School community over the past 12 years. When asked why they still hold the position even after their children have graduated, Matt replied, “We both like football, and we both like to grill.” The two of them finished out their 12th football season together on Friday, Oct. 27 against Jesuit. The hard work that Evans and Beshears have put in has benefited all of us here at Beaverton High School.
