High school stress should be measured by a Richter scale
June 19, 2017
At the age of fourteen, teens are more stressed than an adult in their thirties. The school is the main reason why teens get stressed out, having to deal with many tests and homework at once. Learning new habits on how to manage time is difficult for teens, as well as Junior year being the hardest and most stressful year of high school. In Junior year students are required to take many tests that could really determine their future and teachers are not aware of that. Most students have an AP course, but teachers don’t notice the workload they are adding to a student when they add big projects weekly or monthly. Some teachers consistently add big projects all at once and for a student who needs to work to help his/her family financially, or to save money for college it is hard to manage a good GPA and workflow.
On a scale from one to ten, a teen says his/her stress level is at 5.8 when an adult’s stress level is at 5.1. American Psychological Association stated that teens get overwhelmed and depressed because of the stress they are dealing with, so that is one of the main reasons why a lot of teens are dealing with several emotions at once and have a harder ability to live a healthy lifestyle.
Schools do not provide any support when it comes to stress managing so it is harder to find help. Also, once again the American Psychological Association stated that not having enough sleep is a cause of stress because on an average school night teens have 7.4 hours or fewer of sleep when it is recommended to sleep 8.5 hours. Teens most of the time don’t sleep because of how overwhelmed they are so stress makes sleeping a little less possible. Stress is no joke when it comes to teens, it influences their behavior and can mark a big part of the person’s life. Stress needs to be taken more seriously and people need to start making a change by finding new strategies to make the level of stress decrease.
